Dr. Navneet Tripathi recently operated a very large malignant Parotid tumour in an elderly lady. She was carrying the tumour for long due to fear of surgery and it’s anticipated complications.
Facial nerve and all its branches were preserved by fine dissection. Patient had no facial nerve weakness whatsoever after surgery.
Let’s understand Parotid tumour surgery!!
Parotid surgery, a delicate procedure involving the removal of the parotid gland, requires precision and expertise.
This gland, located near the ear on both sides, plays a crucial role in saliva production.
🔍 The intricacies lie in preserving Facial nerve and it’s fine branches, making it both a cosmetic and functional challenge.
Surgeons have to tread carefully to avoid nerve damage and facial weakness.
👁️🗨️ Why is this important?
Facial nerve passes through the parotid gland. Tumours of parotid gland can lie superficial or deep to the plane of nerve.
Most common tumour of parotid gland is Pleomorphic Adenoma, which although is benign (non cancerous) but can recur if not removed completely (Superficial Parotidectomy).
Awareness of the intricacies helps patients and their families make informed decisions and appreciate the skills of the surgical team.
